{"id":66425,"date":"2023-05-28T20:02:55","date_gmt":"2023-05-28T20:02:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/startup.info\/?p=66425"},"modified":"2023-08-14T21:25:56","modified_gmt":"2023-08-14T21:25:56","slug":"musanacarts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bonjouridee.com\/en\/musanacarts\/","title":{"rendered":"Musana Carts: Improving Street Food Vending Across Africa"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Musana Carts<\/strong>&#8216; founders,<strong> Nataliey Bitature<\/strong> and <strong>Manon Lavaud<\/strong>, are passionate social entrepreneurs who met and conceived of <em>Musana<\/em> concept whilst studying together in <em>San Fransisco<\/em> for a Masters in <em>Social Entrepreneurship<\/em>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Manon and Nataliey saw an opportunity where others see a challenge.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Kampala&#8217;s street vendors work in what is known as an Informal Economy. They are not officially registered and do not pay taxes. They are essentially illegal businesses. Approximately 2\/3 of the workers in the world are employed in the informal sector, which represents a market of $10 trillion dollars worldwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"boombox-responsive-embed \"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Musana Carts Indiegogo campaign\" width=\"1160\" height=\"653\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LJK42Wc5ltg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In this sector, where government usually sees chaos and uncertainty, we see opportunity and entrepreneurial spirit.\u00a0We believe in creating legitimate employment in these economies, and in so doing creating a more egalitarian world. Because it is in the informal economy where most individuals are currently able to earn money, to live and to prosper, it is our mission to help co-create that more egalitarian future with them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-69554\" src=\"https:\/\/bonjouridee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/1AM1419-Edit-Edit-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bonjouridee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/1AM1419-Edit-Edit-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.bonjouridee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/1AM1419-Edit-Edit-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bonjouridee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/1AM1419-Edit-Edit-100x67.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.bonjouridee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/1AM1419-Edit-Edit-674x450.jpg 674w, https:\/\/www.bonjouridee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/1AM1419-Edit-Edit.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em>Our solution is to offer\u00a0street food vendors a framework within which to own and operate a safe, clean and professional business that earns them a sustainable income.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">To do so, we have employed design thinking to produce a &#8216;business-in-a-box&#8217; which prioritizes professionalism in food hygiene standards, customer service, customer satisfaction, and brand promotion.\u00a0 We are the first company in East Africa to create a brand within street vending.\u00a0 This is important because the primary concern the end consumers have revolved around accountability, and how they can trust a new street vendor to serve them safe and hygienic food.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We operate a franchise model that requires franchisees to pay low weekly fees for which they gain access to the Musana brand and all that represents.\u00a0 We provide a high-tech vending cart which incorporates solar power and LPG cooking solutions. On top of this, we support our vendors with financial management tools, and access to cheaper raw material through our in-house distribution network, with which we gain another revenue stream.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">To date, we have supported more than 10 vendors in and around Kampala, increasing their revenue by as much as 100%.
